Evaluation
The Southeastern Fertility Center specializes in the
evaluation of infertility tests commonly performed and discussed below,
including semen analysis, laparoscopy, ultrasound, HSG (x-ray test), postcoital
test, and evaluation for ovulation. The evaluation of a couple depends
on their history and physical examination, as well as any previous evaluation
and treatment. The basic evaluation may include one or more of the following:
- Semen Analysis: Used to determine sperm count, motility, and morphology (shape).

- Ovulatory and Hormonal Assessment: There are
various methods to detect ovulation. The Basal Body Temperature (BBT)
Chart, blood and urine tests, and ultrasounds may all be used. Another
method is the endometrial biopsy. During this office procedure, a small
amount of tissue is removed from the uterus and examined under a microscope.
- Post-Coital Test (PCT): At the time of ovulation,
cervical secretions are collected after intercourse, then analyzed to
determine problems with sperm and cervical mucus interaction.
- Hysterosalpingogram (HSG): A short outpatient
procedure in which dye is placed through the cervix into the uterus
and tubes. In this way, abnormalities of the uterine cavity and blockage
of the tubes may be detected.
- Luteal Phase Assessment: A simple office test
in which a small sample of the uterine cavity is removed, then studied
to determine its preparedness for implantation of the embryo.
- Laparoscopy and/or Hysteroscopy: A laparoscopy
is a surgical procedure in which a small incision is made below the
navel to allow viewing of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the uterus.
During a hysteroscopy, a fiberoptic telescope is inserted through the
vagina to allow viewing of the interior of the uterus. For more detailed
information, see our Reproductive Surgery
page.
If the cause of infertility has not been assessed during
initial testing, it may be necessary to perform more specific procedures.
Further evaluation of the male may include:
- Sperm Antibody Testing
- Kruger Morphology
- Sperm Penetration Assay
- Computer-Assisted Movement Analysis
- Urologic Examination
- Karyotyping
- Testicular Biopsy
- Other

- Other Hormonal and Immunologic Testing
- Falloposcopy
- Others
It is beyond the scope of this page
