Hirsutism (Unwanted Hair Growth) and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

First line therapy for hirsutism is estrogen-progestin contraceptives. Three-month oral pill packs such as Seasonale are preferred because they provide more continuous suppression of androgen production. As an added benefit, they are now available generically.

Laser hair removal has effectively replaced electrolysis. This treatment should only be undertaken once adequate hormonal control of androgen production has been achieved.

Spironolactone and Flutamide, which are anti-androgens, may be added to estrogen-progestin contraceptives to increase efficacy and reduce hirsutism.

Lupron or Synarel are expensive but very effective for difficult cases. These medications should be used in combination with low-dose estrogen or oral contraceptives to reduce symptoms and prevent bone loss, which is reversible once therapy has ceased.

Finasteride and Vaniqa cream are other treatments that we sometimes use at the Southeastern Fertility Center. Please, feel free to ask about these are your office visit.
